VARZIN V2 — Recoverable but Not Composable: Representation Recovery and Systematic Composition in a Frozen Language Model

Separates representation recovery from systematic composition; recovery does not by itself establish compositional generalization.

Evidence boundary

A Zenodo deposit is a citable public record; it does not by itself imply peer review, independent validation, or broader empirical generalization.

01 / record overview

What this record documents.

This preprint reports the integrated Phase 0–2 VARZIN V2 experiment on a frozen Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct model. A controlled synthetic morphological-position dataset was constructed and audited for several leakage modes before representation recovery was evaluated across hidden-state indices. The central distinction is between a structural variable being strongly recoverable from internal representations and that variable being usable for systematic composition on unseen combinations. The public record preserves that distinction explicitly.

Research question

Does strong recovery of a structural variable from a frozen model imply that the model can use that representation as a substrate for systematic compositional generalization?

This question is interpreted within the documented model, dataset, implementation, and evaluation procedure; it is not generalized beyond that evidence.

04 / contribution

What this record adds to the research trail.

The study separates representation recovery from composition and records that successful recovery alone is insufficient evidence for systematic generalization. This is a narrower and more defensible conclusion than treating probe success as proof of compositional competence.

Version V1.0 is the current public Zenodo record listed by VARZIN for the integrated Phase 0–2 report. Any later remediation or follow-up experiment should be cited separately from this fixed deposit.

05 / provenance

Keep the record distinct from later interpretation.

Separates representation recovery from systematic composition; recovery does not by itself establish compositional generalization.

The VARZIN portal preserves the version-specific DOI, deposited creator string, publication date, and repository identity while allowing later project pages to state narrower interpretations, corrections, or negative results explicitly.
